New Rite Aid coupon policy

Rite Aid has updated their coupon policy. (The file still says "August 2010," but at the bottom the document now says "Revised May 2011.") Take a look, but here are the changes:
  • "Buy One Get One Free coupons cannot be used in conjunction with a Buy One Get One Free promotion." To which I say, boo hiss! I have previously ranted about this (about halfway down that post) and the ridiculous idea that using a BOGO coupon with a BOGO sale somehow "cheats" the store.
  • "A customer can use one “cents off” coupon in conjunction with the item they are purchasing on a Buy One Get One Free promotion (or with a Buy One Get One Free coupon), although the value of the cents off coupon cannot exceed the selling price of the item." OK, there are 2 separate issues here. 1) If the item is on sale BOGO, you can only use one $X/Y coupon, not two. Again, boo hiss. 2) If you have a BOGO coupon, you can also combine it with a $X/Y coupon. Which is fair.
  • "Rite Aid may accept up to 4 identical coupons for the same number of qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers within the store manager’s sole discretion." Hopefully, this will help will help prevent people from clearing shelves, if Rite Aid actually enforces it!
  • "When making a return for a product that had a coupon attached, Rite Aid cannot refund cash for the value of the coupon and cannot return the coupon that was used." This one worries me a little. I hope that it means that in those case they will give you a merchandise credit for the full value of the item. To do otherwise would be coupon fraud on their part, since they would be getting the full value of the coupon from both you and the manufacturer. Say you buy a $10 item with a $2 coupon, which you later return. If they insisted on only giving you back $8, and then also submitted the coupon to the manufacturer, then you would be out your coupon, the manufacturer would be out $2, while the store would get the $2 and still have the product on their shelves. We will see how this plays out, but if you are at all worried, just return your items without a receipt and take store credit.
It seems to be the consensus in the blogosphere that these changes are the result of the Craziness exemplified by Totally Loco Channel and their "Extreme Couponing." I finally broke down and watched it the other day (I was home sick! There was nothing else on!) and somebody buy me a vowel, because OH MY GOD. These are exactly the kinds of people who would scheme to buy items with coupons and then return them for cash. They are also the ones who habitually clear shelves, use coupons on the wrong products (yes really) and generally screw things up for the rest of us. So glad that now they have their own reality show to spread the Craziness and make others think a) this is OK or b) that's what all couponers are like.

Hot CVS $5/$20 coupon!

If you get the Hartford Courant, be sure to check the back page of the main section - there is a $5 coupon off a $20 purchase at CVS! This is wicked cool. However, it expires on 5/28 - that is Saturday. So be sure to put together a shopping list soon!

I assume that this coupon will be in other local papers as well. I'm not sure if it is in the papers available on newsstands, or only in home-delivered ones. If you get a different paper and you found the coupon, please leave a note in the comments telling us what page/section it was in!

New CVS Suave Scenario

My cousin Shannon over at Baby Shmizz sent me her Suave scenario at CVS, and I wanted to share it with you!

$6.00  Buy 3 Suave body washes ($2 each)
 $3.34  Buy 2 Suave Professionals shampoo/conditioner (3 for $5)
 $2.00  Buy 2 Suave deodorant ($1 each)
$11.34  Before coupons
-$1.00  Use $1/3 Suave bodywash
-$1.00  Use $1/2 Suave Professionals
-$1.00  Use $1/2 Suave deodorant
 $8.34  Out of pocket
-$3.00  ExtraBucks
$5.34  Net price for 7 products ($0.76 each)

That is wicked awesome! The retail price of those 7 items would be $17.18 - that's 69% savings. Not too shabby! As I told Shannon, I consider anything under $1 for any of those items to be a great deal, so $0.76 each for all of them is fantastic. I will be updating my CVS post to include her scenario.

I love hearing what you got! Please please please, tell me more!

Donating 101

Some not-so-great news from the Hockanum Valley Community Council Tri-Town Food Pantry. The local Stamp Out Hunger food drive last Saturday May 14th yielded approximately 4,000 fewer pounds of food than last year. The pantry serves a lot of families with kids who, once they are out of school for the summer, can no longer receive free breakfasts and lunches. With such a shortfall, there is a very real possibility that the pantry will run out of food before the end of the summer, leaving these kids in serious trouble.

As I continue to urge everyone to donate as much as they can, I did want to remind everyone of a few things that you should NOT be donating:
  • Food past its expiration date*. Yes, even "non-perishables" have an expiration date, and the food pantry has to throw those items out when it gets them! Dave Engelson, the director of HVCC, told me he got some items that had expired in 1994. 1994! That means they would be older, in many cases, than the kids who would be expected to eat them. Gross. If it's not good enough for you to eat, please don't assume that someone else will want it.
Tip: If you have a stash, like I do, be sure to rotate your items so that you use the oldest items first. If you keep putting new items in front of the older ones, there is a much greater chance that you won't notice when something goes out of date.
  • Food that has been opened*. This seems like a no-brainer, yes? But Dave tells me they got loose bags of tea, half-eaten boxes of cereal, etc. Again, they cannot use these. Look, if you open a box of cereal and you decide you don't like it, you either suck it up, or I don't know, leave it out for the birds or something. But don't dump it on the food pantry for them to throw out for you, 'K?
  • Other items they might not be able to accept, like OTC medications, perishable items, etc. When in doubt, call ahead and check. Some places can take things like aspirin and cold medicine, some can't. Some have fridges and freezers, others don't. If you drop off a bunch of stuff they can't use, chances are it might end up being discarded, especially if it's perishable stuff they have no way to keep cold.
The good news is that I am meeting with Dave at HVCC on Friday. I'm hoping that I can harness the power of the Internets to help them out! Stay tuned, because I might be making some more food drive announcements for anyone in the Manchester/South Windsor/Vernon area.

*Not that I think any of my readers would be guilty of these! For one thing, you can obviously read and are clearly fairly intelligent if you're here. :-)

If you haven't done your grocery shopping yet, there are some coupons in today's paper that you can use this week - see my Stop & Shop and Big Y posts for all the latest matchups!

Unfortunately their coupon policy does not address this and even though technically it's kosher, there's nothing you can point to to force the issue. If you do have to use one or the other, here's how it would work:
 - Buy 3 bodywash, use BOGO Old Spice and $2/1 Gillette. Net price $1.67 for 3

They will have to manually adjust the coupon value down.
Note that even if you don't have any coupons, you can get free toothbrushes! Any coupons you do have are just icing on the cake.)

CVS Deals and Coupon Matchups 5/15/11 - 5/21/11

CVS seems kind of meh this week - no freebies, not much for super cheap. However, I have heard reports that all sorts of goodies are printing from the CVS coupon kiosk when you scan your card - $3/10 grocery items, $3/$10 healthcare items, and more. If you get the grocery coupon, there is also an Extra Bucks deal on select gum and candy - spend $10, get $3. If the store coupon is vague like this, it is usually up to the cashier to decide what counts as "grocery" or "healthcare." Sometimes I'm able to get things like lip balm to count as health (it's with the cough drops!), and sometimes not. YMMV! (Your mileage may vary)

Spend $15 on select Nivea products, get $5 Extra Bucks
Use $2/1 lotion coupon from the 5/15 RedPlum (exp. 6/26) or $1/1 lotion coupon from the 5/1 RedPlum (exp. 6/5)

Spend $25 on L'Oreal skin or sun care, get $10 Extra Bucks

Use $1/1 Sublime Bronze coupon from the 4/17 RedPlum (exp. 6/12) or the 5/15 RedPlum (exp. 7/10)

$5.97  Buy 2 Aussie or Herbal Essences hair care
-$2.00  Use 2 $1/1 coupons from the 5/1 P&G insert (exp. 5/31)
 $3.97  Out of pocket

Couponing for Community - WOW!

The totals are in on the Couponing for Community Facebook page. You may remember that the original goal, nationwide, was to donate 10,000 items to charity between May 8-14. Any guesses how many items were actually donated?

26,639.

10,000 items were posted by Thursday morning. Friday night the number was over 15,000. They big push from the Stanp Out Hunger drive on Saturday put the totals through the roof. Kaley of Cha-Ching on a Shoestring, the amazing force behind this event, has put together a slide show of donations. I'm not sure if my 113 were in there, but I know they were part of the 26,639, and I am so freaking thrilled! I cannot wait for next year. In fact, there is already talk of making this a semi-annual event, which I think would be brilliant.

I hope some of you were able to put out a bag of things for your mail carrier to pick up yesterday, and I really, really hope that some of them were things that you got for FREE with coupons! Did you participate? Let us know in the comments!

My Couponing for Community haul!

I finally dragged up everything out of the pantry in the basement and assembled it all to get ready for donation! It felt really, really good. My husband's car is packed full and I will be making the trip to the Hockanum Valley Tri-Town Food Pantry tomorrow after work.

I had to take pictures in two separate rounds - my table was too small! Here are the food items:
  • 1 box cereal
  • 2 bottles salad dressing
  • 2 pasta salad mix
  • 1 can pineapple
  • 5 noodle bowls
  • 2 cans soup
  • 2 cans chicken broth
  • 2 jars pickles
  • 2 jars relish
  • 3 jars marinara sauce
  • 7 cans tomatoes
  • 29 food items total

And here are the personal and household items:
  • 20 tubes toothpaste
  • 3 floss
  • 9 toothbrushes
  • 1 bottle mouthwash
  • 12 packages sanitary pads
  • 2 boxes tampons
  • 1 jumbo pack diapers
  • 5 baby lotions
  • 7 body washes
  • 10 bottles shampoo
  • 6 deodorants
  • 5 packages of razors
  • 2 packages of Ziploc bags
  • 1 roll paper towels
  • 84 items total
That's a combined total of 113 items towards the Couponing for Community goal of 10,000! And since my personal goal was 100 items, I am thrilled. I'm estimating that the value of all these items is around $300. I didn't keep exact records, but I think I probably spent less than $10 on all the food, and maybe $15 on all the personal care items. I know that the toothpaste and brushes were all completely free. So were the pads and tampons. The shampoo cost anywhere from $0 to $1 per bottle, so say an average of $0.50 each. Same with the deodorant. The razors and the baby lotions were all free, too. The biggest item was the diapers, which I know I got for $4.

How about you? Have you put together anything to have your mail carrier pick up on Saturday? Don't forget to post your totals on the C4C Facebook page, and please send me pictures and lists to post here!

What are you getting for Couponing for Community?

Are you making a donation for Couponing for Community this week? I can't wait! It will be nice to get my basement back. :-) I am going to try to pick up a few last-minute items tomorrow and then assemble, catalog, and photograph my donations tomorrow night. I have to double check with the food pantry on their hours to see when I can drop off. If your donation will fit into 1 or 2 bags, you can leave it by your mailbox on Saturday and your mail carrier will pick it up as part of Stamp Out Hunger day.

Remember, if you want to participate, make sure you like the C4C Facebook page. They now have a counter up to track donations - click on the "See Our Progress" tab on the left. You can submit your own totals and see what other people have donated. As of this posting, they are currently at 7300 items - almost 3/4 of the way towards the 10,000 item goal!

Want to make that number go up? Check out these free and cheap deals available this week! All of these are $1 or less. This is just a list - click on the links to find out how to get these prices.

Rite Aid is OK this week, with possible free Excedrin, cheap Revlon makeup and cosmetics, and a few other deals, but personally I was more impressed with Walgreens and CVS.  There are some good SCR (Single Check Rebate) scenarios - you can learn more about those at the Rite Aid Basics page.

Coupons galore

Just a quick note before I start what promises to be an epic clipping spree - If ever there was a weekend to consider getting a second paper, this might be it! I count 6 coupon inserts, including:
- 2 SmartSource (one with Purina on the cover, one with Eggland's)
- RedPlum
- P&G Brandsaver
- "Moments to Save" (looks like mostly snack foods - Lays, Pepsi, etc)
- Target coupons (separate from their sale flyer - it includes 27 store coupons that you can combine with manufacturer coupons)
Make sure you don't miss any! I almost threw out the Moments to Save insert before I saw the coupons on the back.
Sharpen those scissors, and I will be back with some matchups later today.
