No clipping tomorrow

Two quick things before I head out to enjoy the beee-yoo-tiful weather!
  1. There are no coupon inserts in tomorrow's paper. Have a clip-free weekend!
  2. Today is the last day to watch and earn May's Rite Aid Video Values coupons.
Keep an eye on those expiration dates this week - a lot of stuff expires on Tuesday. Now get out there and enjoy the weekend!

New Rite Aid coupon policy

Rite Aid has updated their coupon policy. (The file still says "August 2010," but at the bottom the document now says "Revised May 2011.") Take a look, but here are the changes:
  • "Buy One Get One Free coupons cannot be used in conjunction with a Buy One Get One Free promotion." To which I say, boo hiss! I have previously ranted about this (about halfway down that post) and the ridiculous idea that using a BOGO coupon with a BOGO sale somehow "cheats" the store.
  • "A customer can use one “cents off” coupon in conjunction with the item they are purchasing on a Buy One Get One Free promotion (or with a Buy One Get One Free coupon), although the value of the cents off coupon cannot exceed the selling price of the item." OK, there are 2 separate issues here. 1) If the item is on sale BOGO, you can only use one $X/Y coupon, not two. Again, boo hiss. 2) If you have a BOGO coupon, you can also combine it with a $X/Y coupon. Which is fair.
  • "Rite Aid may accept up to 4 identical coupons for the same number of qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers within the store manager’s sole discretion." Hopefully, this will help will help prevent people from clearing shelves, if Rite Aid actually enforces it!
  • "When making a return for a product that had a coupon attached, Rite Aid cannot refund cash for the value of the coupon and cannot return the coupon that was used." This one worries me a little. I hope that it means that in those case they will give you a merchandise credit for the full value of the item. To do otherwise would be coupon fraud on their part, since they would be getting the full value of the coupon from both you and the manufacturer. Say you buy a $10 item with a $2 coupon, which you later return. If they insisted on only giving you back $8, and then also submitted the coupon to the manufacturer, then you would be out your coupon, the manufacturer would be out $2, while the store would get the $2 and still have the product on their shelves. We will see how this plays out, but if you are at all worried, just return your items without a receipt and take store credit.
It seems to be the consensus in the blogosphere that these changes are the result of the Craziness exemplified by Totally Loco Channel and their "Extreme Couponing." I finally broke down and watched it the other day (I was home sick! There was nothing else on!) and somebody buy me a vowel, because OH MY GOD. These are exactly the kinds of people who would scheme to buy items with coupons and then return them for cash. They are also the ones who habitually clear shelves, use coupons on the wrong products (yes really) and generally screw things up for the rest of us. So glad that now they have their own reality show to spread the Craziness and make others think a) this is OK or b) that's what all couponers are like.

Couponing For Community week is coming up! I have been saving up items in my stash since February (don't worry, I'm keeping an eye on expiration dates) and I cannot wait to tally it all up. However, I know that many of you don't usually stock up and so don't have a pile of stuff to donate. Don't be left out! You can still participate in the donation drive and contribute towards the goal of 10,000 items, just with free and cheap items you can buy this week.

I've compiled a list of needed goods that are all UNDER $1 this week at drugstores. Please, please consider grabbing these during your shopping trips and donating them to a shelter or food pantry next week. This is just a summary - click on the links to see the breakdown of how to get these deals.

Rite Aid Deals and Coupon Matchups 4/17/11 - 4/23/11

(Updated 4/21: Does anyone tell me that I had the title of this post wrong? They do not. This is the Rite Aid post, not the CVS post - obviously!)

Rite Aid isn't quite as exciting as Walgreens this week, but there are definitely some good deals. I have not even begun to tackle the $10/$30 Household products +Up Rewards, but it certainly looks promising! A lot of times when they run these I can't find enough products worth buying, but there are plenty of items here that I buy on a regular basis anyway. I'm taking a road trip tomorrow; maybe I'll bring along my flyer and try to come up with a few scenarios in the car!

$17.00  Buy 2 Loreal Preference haircolor
-$4.00  Use 2 $2/1 coupons from the 3/20 SmartSource (exp. 5/15) or the 4/17 SmartSource (exp. 6/12)
-$4.00  Use $4/2 in-ad store coupon

 $4.00  Net price for 2

$4.99  Little Remedies fever, cold, or tummys
-$1.00  Use $1/1 coupon from the 3/27 SmartSource (exp. 5/31) or printable
 $3.99  Out of pocket
-$3.00  +Up Rewards
-$1.00  Submit for Single Check Rebate
FREE  Net price

 $2.50  Lysol Disinfecting wipes
-$1.50  Use $1.50/1 Facebook printable
-$1.00  Use $1/1 Rite Aid Video Values
FREE  Net price

 $5.99  Got2Be stylers
-$2.00  Use $2/1 Rite Aid Video Values
 $3.99  Out of pocket
-$2.00  +Up Rewards
 $1.99  Net price

 $7.99  Schick Quattro or Intuition
-$2.00  Use $2/1 Intuition from the 3/20 SmartSource (exp. 5/1) or the 4/17 SmartSource (exp. 5/29) or $2/1 Quattro from the 4/17 SmartSource (exp. 5/29)
 $5.99  Out of pocket
-$3.00  +Up Rewards
 $2.99  Net price

$15.96  Buy 4 Nivea for Men bodywash
-$12.00  Use 4 $3/1 coupons from the 4/17 RedPlum (exp. 5/15)
   $3.96  Out of pocket
 -$5.00  +Up Rewards
   $1.04  MONEYMAKER
(I realize that a lot of you do not have 4 of these coupons. In fact, I hesitated to even post it, but it is such a good deal I did want to make you aware of it. There are a couple things you can do. You can go in with a friend. Or, even if you only have 2 or 3 coupons, this is still a great deal. It works out to $1.96 for 4 if you have 3 coupons; $4.96 for 4 if you have 2 coupons.)

$7.00  Buy 2 Tresemme shampoo, conditioner, or styler (at least 1 must be Climate Control)
-$1.00  Use $1/1 Climate Control from the 3/20 SmartSource (exp. 5/31)
-$1.00  Use $1/1 Rite Aid Video Values
 $5.00  Out of pocket
-$2.00  +Up Rewards
 $3.00  Net price for 2

Buy $30 of select household products, get a $10 +Up Reward
There are a ton of qualifying products! I'm too overwhelmed to do a scenario right now. :-) But For The Mommas has an excellent post giving you all the coupon matchups, including Video Values! The only caveat I will add to her post is that I have heard elsewhere that this reward is NOT tracking, and all $30 must be purchased in a single transaction.

Rite Aid Deals 3/6/11 - 3/12/11

Check your Rite Aid flyers this week for a 4-page insert of store coupons! Remember since they're store coupons, you can stack them with manufacturer coupons. However, I don't know any of the regular prices on the items in the flyer, so I don't know what's a good deal or not. I will try to check prices Monday or Tuesday and let you know!

This is a good week for Single Check Rebates. If you're not familar with Rite Aid's rebate program, I have added it to the "Rite Aid Basics" page. In essence, you submit your receipt info for qualifying items online, then at the end of the month you get a single check for all your rebates, which you can cash at the bank or use like a gift card at Rite Aid. I am very happy about the Keri lotion and Comtrex moneymakers!

Rite Aid deals 2/6/11 - 2/12/11

There are quite a few good SCR deals this week, and I realized that I never quite explained this program. SCR is short for Rite Aid’s Single Check Rebate program. When there is a SCR available, you can redeem it one of two ways. You can pick up a flyer in the store, then fill out a form on the back and mail it in. If you choose to go this route, I assume that the Pony Express then brings you your rebate in gold doubloons, or something. Regardless, I certainly can’t help you.

Fortunately for the rest of us living in civilization, you can also request your SCR online. First, go to https://riteaid.rebateplus.com/ to set up your account. (The one thing that bugs me about Rite Aid’s website is that they cannot consolidate accounts. I have a separate login for Video Values, Wellness+, and SCRs. PITA.) Then, throughout the month, you enter your receipts on this website. At the end of the month, you request your check, and a few weeks later it arrives. (Note – they will only send one check each month, so don’t request your check until the end of February, after you have entered all your receipts.)

Now some months, my SCR check might only be a buck or two. Normally, this would not even be worth cashing. But the nice thing is that you can redeem them right at the store and use it towards your purchase, just like a gift card. So although your money is tied up a lot longer, and it’s more complicated, in essence you can work SCRs just like the +UP Rewards.

Crazy Coupon Non-Acceptance Tactics

I had a couple of incidents today with cashiers that I thought I'd share, partly to get them off my chest and partly as a public service announcement.

My first stop was at Walgreens. I was planning on buying 4 items (TP, Arnicare, Blink eyedrops, and Icy Hot). I had 4 mfr coupons, 1 store coupon, and 3 Register Rewards I wanted to use. Because of Walgreens' policy that the number of coupons used cannot exceed the number of items, I bought 4 "filler" items - Valentine's pencils that were on sale for $0.12. Eight items, eight coupons - good to go.

Or not. For some reason, the Arnicare $2 printable coupon wouldn't scan. (I admit that I have had this problem with pdf coupons - I think my printer automatically fits to page and I always forget to tell it to print actual size, so the bar code gets a little screwed up.) Grumble, grumble - but it shouldn't be a big deal. Usually the cashier will just verify that there is nothing wrong with the coupon and that I did indeed buy the product, and then enter it in manually. Occasionally, they will have to call over a manager to override the register.

Not this woman. Instead, the transaction went like this.
Scan. Beep. Scan. Beep.
Cashier: Hands coupon back to me. "I can't take this one."
Me: "Why?"
Cashier: "You have too many coupons."
Me: "No, I have 8 items and 8 coupons. Besides, you tried to scan this one second. You scanned 6 more after it and they went in fine."
Cashier: Glares. Counts my items. Counts my coupons. Studies all 7 suspiciously. "You must have gotten the wrong size."
Me: "No, I didn't." Shows her that I did, indeed, buy the right size.
Cashier: "The coupon can't be for more than the item is worth."
Me: "It cost $5.99. The coupon is for $2."
Cashier: Sighs. Scan. Beep. Scan. Beep. Looks at me expectantly, holding the coupon out as though waiting for me to break down, apologize, and take it back.
Me: Returns her stare. I have stared down a room full of freshman learning Shakespeare against their will today. This woman does not intimidate me.

Eventually she relented and put it through. Here's what bugged me about this transaction: If the cashier had just admitted, "I'm sorry, I don't know why this won't go through," I would have just told her to set the Arnicare aside, ring me out for the rest of the items, and ask her to call a manager so I could do the Arnicare separately. Instead, she tried to lie to me to get out of accepting a valid coupon. If I hadn't been familiar with Walgreens' coupon policy, I probably would have gotten flustered and taken the coupon back. Whether she honestly didn't know and was just guessing to save face, or she was deliberately lying to get me to leave, she was the kind of cashier you have to watch out for.

Next stop, Rite Aid. I needed more ice cream (!) and I wanted to see if they had any more of the BOGO Stayfree. Yay, they did! And I still had one more BOGO coupon.

But when I got to the register, the cashier (who is actually very nice and has been very helpful to me in the past) got all aflutter when I handed her the coupon. Next thing I know she's taken it into the manager's office! When she came back, she said that there had been a "conference call" a few days ago and that they were no longer supposed to honor BOGO coupons in conjunction with a BOGO sale. They were only supposed to give you 1/2 the value of the item, since "you're really not buying any" and "the store was losing so much money."

This is where my bullshit meter started going off. First off, I double checked when I got home, and there has been NO change to Rite Aid's coupon policy. So this was clearly a decision by a manager at the store or district level. And it was a decision based on a totally faulty premise. The whole "store losing money on coupons" argument is baloney. Your store, like every other store, is compensated by the manufacturer for the full value of the coupon. It doesn't matter if I pay $3.99 in cash, or if I give you a coupon and you later get the $3.99 from the manufacturer (actually $4.07 - they get an $0.08 handling fee, too), the store still gets their money. Trying to make me feel guilty, like I am somehow ripping you off, is just another way of trying to get out of accepting a valid coupon.

In this instance, she did end up letting me use the coupon, although of course she tried to make it seem like she was doing me a huge favor. We'll see what happens next time, and I will keep an eye on Rite Aid's coupon policy in the meantime.

Whew! OK, I feel better. Like I said, part of my frustration is just in the wasted time, part comes from the feeling of being manipulated, and part of it comes on behalf of everyone who's following the rules, just trying to save some money, and getting lied to in the process.

Anyone have any cashier horror stories to share?

Rite Aid Deals 1/30 - 2/5

Holy cow, this is a HUGE week at Rite Aid. Which is a relief, after last week's snoozer (I didn't even bother going last week). As always, this is by no means an exhaustive list. Be sure to check the flyer for stuff I missed, stuff that's on sale without a coupon, etc.

You may have noticed that I'm not bothering creating scenarios for the "big" +UP Rewards programs - the Buy $100 of selected items, get $20, or the buy $30 get $10, etc. That's because a) I don't have enough accurate prices to work out scenarios, b) it gets really complicated, and c) in a lot of cases I don't think it's worth it to try to buy things just to get the reward. If they are things you need, then by all means go for it! Unless it states otherwise, all of the qualifying totals are before manufacturer coupons; however they may be after store coupons (ie Video Values). Check your receipt - it will tell you what your total towards the reward is.

On to the matchups for this week - Free toothpaste, Stayfree pads, Afrin, and a cold medicine moneymaker!

Rite Aid deals 1/23-1/29

Sorry these are so late! Not only am I late in getting these up, but with the snow coming I'm not even sure when I'll be able to make it out to actually check the stores. If you see any mistakes, or deals I missed, please let me know.

There are 3 new $1 off your Rite Aid purchase Video Values coupons this month! They’re called “Winter Rewards, ” “Wellness+,” and “Rx Services.” Remember, that’s just the names of the videos you watch – the coupons are good off any non-prescription purchase. In addition, you can get a coupon for $4 off your purchase of $20 or more when you watch 16 beauty videos. These videos don’t come with coupons (boo) and you can tell which ones they are because they say “1 Credit” instead of “$1”. I usually just run the videos on my laptop while I’m watching TV. All the other Video Values coupons have reset, so take a look at the list  and start watching!

While there are some deals at Rite Aid this week, a lot of them overlap ones at CVS and Walgreens – and the ones at the other places are better. Here are some of the best coupon matchups - be sure to check the Rite Aid circular for other sales on stuff you might need.
