Big Y comes through again with a Buy One Get Two Free sale! Remember, while their official coupon policy states that they will not accept coupons on free items, in practice they usually will, so I assume that in my matchups. Oh, and don't forget to check www.bigy.com/coupons for printable coupons on store brand products.

This is a major week at Big Y! After being slightly disappointed in the last Buy One Get Two sale, I am wicked impressed this time around. There are a ton of great matchups below. Big Y deals 2/17/11 - 2/23/11
Yes! There are some good matchups at Big Y this week using their store printable coupons, located here. I have not yet run into any print limits on these, so they're great for stocking up. Usually the expiration is a week from when you print them. I suggest making up your list and then printing all the coupons you want in one go - they will print multiples on one page, so you can save some paper. Make sure the cashier sees that if the barcode doesn't go through - which has happened to me before - that there is a code for them to type in so you get the discount.

Big Y matchups 2/3/11 - 2/9/11
Yes! Finally, a Buy One Get Two Free sale at Big Y. There is also a Unilever deal that I discuss at the end of this post.
When it comes to using coupons with a BOGO or B1G2 sale, bear in mind that according to their official coupon policy, Big Y does not have to accept coupons against the free items. Theoretically you should only be able to use 1 coupon per deal. In practice, however, I have almost never had any trouble using coupons against the free items. (The exception was one time when the sale didn’t ring in and she had to take it off manually – in that case, the 2nd coupon wouldn’t go through.) So go ahead and give them multiple coupons – the worst that can happen is that they will hand them back to you, and at best you get some really amazing deals.
I also wanted to use this as an opportunity make another quick plug for donating extra items to your local food bank, pantry, or shelter. I was so excited when I found out that the Tri-Town Pantry in Vernon now has a fridge and a freezer for perishable goods. If you look at the first two pages of the flyer, a lot of the best B1G2 deals are for meat and seafood. Some of those I can freeze myself, but when, for instance, am I going to be able to use 15 pounds of russet potatoes (5lb bags B1G2) before they all sprout? Now I know that the Pantry can take the extra 10 pounds and put them to good use.

This is like the grocery store equivalent of a Register Reward or +UP Reward. If you buy $20 worth of specified products, you get a $5 coupon (called a “catalina” after the company that makes the machines that print them out) to use on your next order.
The big question with these catalina deals is, what counts as “$20 worth”? When we used to have Shaws in Connecticut, they would calculate the amount you needed to buy before any sales or coupons. So let’s say you bought 4 items that were normally priced at $5 (the “pre-sale price,” or PSP), but were on sale for $3 each, and you had 4 $1/1 coupons. You would pay $8 and still get back the $5 catalina. Stop & Shop, on the other hand, specifically states on most of their catalina deals that the qualifying total must be after any sales or coupons. Boo.
I did some quick checking, and no one seems to know how Big Y is calculating their qualifying prices on this deal. Based on the wording of the ad, which states that you must use your Big Y loyalty card, I am going to guess that the $20 must be based off of the sale prices, however since they don’t say anything about coupons I would think that any coupons taken off would not count against your total. But that is totally my own uninformed opinion. If anyone tries this, please let me know what worked for you!

Big Y matchups for 1/27 - 2/2
I am getting these matchups up before we go out to dinner! Some good stuff going on at Big Y this week. First, there are 3 Dollar Doubler coupons in the circulars mailed to your house or in your paper. They do not appear in the ones at the store, so make sure you clip them out and bring them with you! They will allow you to double up to 3 manufacturer’s $1 coupons, essentially taking up to $3 extra off your order. The only caveat you have to worry about is that lately Big Y has gotten pretty strict about “Do Not Double” coupons. Check the fine print on your coupons – if it says “Do Not Double,” you can’t use it with the Dollar Doubler.
There are some good sales going on. Not quite Buy One Get 2 Free, but there’s a lot of BOGO on meat, especially chicken. This would be a good week to stock up and freeze.

Grocery matchups 1/20-1/27 and slight rant
“It’s impossible to eat healthy with coupons.”
This is probably the #1 complaint you hear about couponing. And it’s valid…. in a way. Just like the defense of couponing, “Sure you can, there’s tons of coupons for healthy food!” is also valid… in a way.
There are some good groceries you can get with coupons. Yogurt, bagged salad, frozen vegetables, bread, hummus, cereal. There are even coupons on organic food. But to be honest, if all you ate every week was stuff that you could buy with coupons, you’d be eating a lot of soup, mac & cheese, and Hamburger Helper. (Not that I have anything against any of those. But I have high blood pressure. That little Helper hand might as well be putting a gun in my mouth.)
It’s no secret that it is cheaper to eat junk food than it is to eat what Michael Pollan would call real food. Junk food also has a higher profit margin, for producers and the stores. So I don’t know why everyone acts all shocked, shocked! that most coupons are for processed, prepackaged food. Duh.
But there is a middle ground. If I can save $30 off a $100 grocery bill, buying food that we would have eaten anyway, then I’m happy. I use coupons on some items so that I can afford to buy the more expensive, healthier stuff, like produce and meat. Can I bring a $500 grocery tab down to $9, like some extreme couponers promise? Nope. Because what they’re buying is totally unrealistic and would not help you at all come dinner time.
Last week at Big Y I bought $60 worth of stuff, took $15 off in store sales and $15 in coupons. So I saved about $30, or 50%. Not bad, right? Now here’s the thing: some of the things I bought were not on sale and did not have coupons. I could have just not bought them, and then maybe I would have saved $30 and only spent $5 or $10. Then I could brag that I saved 75% on my grocery bill, but I wouldn’t have gotten the things that I needed. My suspicion is that a lot of those Crazy couponers you see going on about how much they save at the grocery store are buying crap they don’t need and forgoing stuff they do need just to massage their numbers.
All this to lead up to my grocery matchups for the week. :-) Sorry, I just had to get all that off my chest! Bear in mind that this isn’t an exhaustive list. I’m only making the sale/coupon matchups, but there are plenty of good sales, even without coupons, that you should definitely read the circular for.

The big promotion this week is an offer to save $5 off your order when you buy $7 of the featured products. If you needed them, this is a good deal, but I don’t think any of the sale prices make it worth buying stuff just to get this promotion.
There’s not a lot else going on at Stop & Shop this week. They’ve been advertising this as “The biggest sale of the season!” but I’m not impressed. Maybe there will be more after new coupons come out on Sunday. Meh.

STOP & SHOP
To get store coupons at Stop & Shop, you’ll have to use those new price scanners. When you get them you can scroll through the Savings to see your offers, and more will pop up as you shop, based on what you buy. These can be combined with manufacturer coupons.
Stop & Shop will double coupons up to $0.99, even those marked “Do Not Double.”
The big promotion this week is an offer to save $5 off your order when you buy $7 of the featured products. If you needed them, this is a good deal, but I don’t think any of the sale prices make it worth buying stuff just to get this promotion.
There’s not a lot else going on at Stop & Shop this week. They’ve been advertising this as “The biggest sale of the season!” but I’m not impressed. Maybe there will be more after new coupons come out on Sunday. Meh.
